I'm aware they changed it to "Raspberry Pi OS," but I refuse to call it that because it's just Debian with non-free packages by default, which makes it nothing more than a worse version of Debian. The system runs headless to save resources, and because there's no monitor attached so why bother.

== Cause ==

The incident was caused by a failure of the system's 32GB SD card, which had become corrupted after a power outage. The server was down for two weeks as [https://www.spacehippie.ca/~hdw I] had to have physical access to the system to get it back up and running.

== Failure of Backups ==

When I got access to the system, I found that the 32GB backup drive was full and that it was only storing partial backups. I hadn't checked whether or not it was full, since I only keep one week of backups and figured that one week's worth of [[website]]/[[Minecraft]] saves would fit on a 32GB drive. The wiki's MySQL database was also not backed up. This situation complicated restoring service.

I was able to recover all of the data from the SD card, and transferred all necessary data back to the Pi, which I equipped with a new, 128GB SD card and a 128GB backup drive. I also reorganized the various services so that they weren't all running from my personal account, and made daemons for the Minecraft server and the [[IRC Bouncer]] so that they automatically start on power-on and restart if they crash. I also took various measures to improve the security of the system, even though this (thankfully) wasn't a security incident.

Bouncer

A bouncer is a piece of software that allows you to log into an IRC network from multiple devices, allows you to stay connected even when those devices aren't, and keeps a backlog of messages that are sent when you aren't logged in. This server runs a bouncer called ZNC.

== Using ZNC ==

As a Space Hippie member, you're entitled to an account on our install of ZNC. You can log into ZNC at [http://www.spacehippie.ca:1025 www.spacehippie.ca:1025].

=== First Login ===

The first time you log in, use your system username and <strong>the password you were assigned upon registration</strong>. After logging in, you can change your password by going to "Your Settings" and entering your new password in the "Password" and "Confirm Password" fields, then scrolling to the bottom and clicking "save and continue."

=== Adding a Network and Channels ===

Go to "your settings," and then under "networks," click "add." Give it a name, set your nicknames, etc, and then under "servers," click "add." Add the address of the server, <strong>and make sure the port is correct</strong>. Usually it helps to uncheck the box in the "SSL" column, as it doesn't work with all servers. Then scroll down to the bottom and click "add network and continue." You've just added a network - time to add some channels.

Now, under "channels," click "add." In the "channel name" field, type in the channel's name (for example, <code>#general</code>). <strong>Then make sure to check the box that says "enabled."</strong> Then click "Add channel and return," and your bouncer is set up. Now all that's left is to connect to it.

=== Connecting to the Bouncer ===

In your IRC client, add a network. Set the name to whatever you want - if you're looking to connect to Rizon, you may want to name it "Rizon."

Then, <strong>no matter what network you're connecting to</strong>, set the server to <code>spacehippie.ca/1025</code>. Then, in the password field, type in <code>[Your ZNC username]/[Network that you added to ZNC - Case Sensitive]:[Your ZNC password]</code>. For example, the password field could look like <code>JohnDoe/Rizon:ABC123</code>.

Save the network and connect to it. You should automatically join all the channels you added in the ZNC web interface. When you close your client/turn off your computer, you'll stay logged into all your channels, thus keeping your nickname and operator status, and when you log back in you'll find a backlog of messages that were sent to the channel while you were away.

IRC is peak chat technology. It isn't owned by anyone, and anyone can set up their own IRC network very easily. To make your IRC experience even better, Space Hippie provides members with an account on our [[Bouncer|IRC bouncer]]!

== How to use IRC ==

IRC is easy to use, and it's easy on your internet connection. First, you need a client. The best graphical client is [https://hexchat.github.io/ HexChat]. If you want a client that runs in your terminal, [https://irssi.org/ Irssi] is also an excellent choice, but it isn't as beginner-friendly. [https://weechat.org/ WeeChat] is also a popular CLI client. You can also use a web-based client like [https://kiwiirc.com/ KiwiIRC]. Whichever you choose, chatting is just a matter of setting up your client, joining a server, and then joining a channel.

In HexChat, a network list should appear on startup. Select a network, select a channel, and chat away. If you frequent a channel/network, you may consider setting it to auto-connect when you open your client, so you can disable the network list on startup. You can also add networks that aren't on the list, like the Space Hippie network!

To connect to the Space Hippie IRC network, add a new network, set the server to <code>spacehippie.ca/6667</code> and join channel <code>#general</code>.

== Bots ==

Some IRC networks have bots, which are automated users that respond to commands. Some have an administrative function, like NickServ on Rizon and other networks, which allows users to register nicknames.
